Shopping Centre Floor Restoration Programme

A large regional shopping centre in West Yorkshire required a full restoration programme for its common area flooring.

Over several years of heavy footfall, daily cleaning, and exposure to dirt and spillages, the hard floor surfaces across the mall had gradually lost their original finish. The floor appeared dull and uneven in places, with ingrained dirt and polish build-up affecting the overall presentation of the centre.

In some of the busiest areas such as entrances, food court walkways, and main circulation routes, the condition of the floor was also beginning to affect slip resistance and overall safety.

The centre management team wanted to restore the appearance of the flooring while improving safety standards, but any work needed to be carefully planned around trading hours to avoid disruption to retailers and customers.

ICS Cleaning Services developed a structured floor restoration programme designed to bring the flooring back to a clean, consistent finish while improving slip resistance across the shopping centre.

The project involved a combination of deep machine scrubbing, strip and seal restoration, and anti-slip floor treatments across the main mall areas, entrances, and high-traffic zones.

To minimise disruption to the centre’s operations, the work was scheduled during overnight access windows when the centre was closed to the public.

The programme was carefully phased to allow individual sections of the mall to be restored in sequence, ensuring the entire floor area could be completed efficiently while maintaining access for cleaning teams and security staff.

The restoration programme was delivered by a specialist ICS floor care team consisting of four trained operatives supported by a dedicated project supervisor.

Works were carried out during overnight shifts between 10:00pm and 6:00am to ensure there was no disruption to daily trading.

Each night the team focused on specific zones within the centre, using professional floor restoration machinery to remove old polish, deep clean the surfaces, and apply new seal and finishing treatments.

This phased approach allowed the project to progress steadily while ensuring all areas were safe and ready for use before the centre reopened each morning.

Quality assurance formed a key part of the project delivery.

Before and after photographic records were taken for each zone to demonstrate the improvement in floor condition and presentation.

Slip resistance testing was also carried out following the restoration works to ensure treated areas met appropriate safety standards.

The project supervisor carried out nightly inspections and signed off completed areas with the shopping centre’s facilities management team to ensure standards were consistently achieved throughout the programme.

The restoration programme delivered a significant improvement in the appearance and safety of the shopping centre’s common areas.

The flooring was restored to a much brighter and more consistent finish, helping to improve the overall presentation of the centre for both visitors and tenants.

Slip resistance levels were improved across key high-traffic areas, reducing potential safety risks and supporting the centre’s health and safety objectives.

Following the success of the initial programme, ICS now supports the centre with periodic floor maintenance treatments to help protect the finish and extend the life of the flooring.
