How are cleaning hours calculated?
Cleaning hours are estimated by combining your school's cleanable floor area with a productivity assumption for its building type, then adjusting for factors that make a site quicker or slower to clean.
Beyond floor area, the estimate accounts for building layout, age, floor types, site access and the required cleaning standard. These factors are combined with a productivity rate to produce an indicative weekly cleaning-hours figure, without treating the calculation as a black box.
What is a cleaning productivity rate?
A productivity rate is expressed in square metres per labour hour (m²/hour) — it describes how much floor area one cleaner can reasonably clean to a given standard in an hour.
A single productivity figure should not be applied to every school. Denser furniture, more washrooms, higher occupancy, older or more complex layouts, and enhanced cleaning standards all reduce the area a cleaner can cover per hour. This estimator applies a base productivity rate for your school type — an ICS operational assumption informed by industry cleaning-productivity practice, not a single external benchmark — then adjusts it using the complexity factors you provide.
